Identification Number. PIN refers to the numeric password shared between a
system and a user. This is mainly to authenticate the particular user to the
system. PIN is mostly used with the banking systems and non-financial systems.
For example, the PIN of your ATM card may come in a secret envelope and that
PIN should be known only to you and the ATM system. Also, PIN is entered during
various transactions including Internet transactions, logging into a restricted
website, POS transactions, etc.

Index Number in India. PIN refers to the 6-digit number system used by the
Indian Postal Department. PIN is found in the address of postal documents like
letters, envelopes, etc. The concept of PIN number was first introduced in 1972
and it represents the region of the country to which the letter is sent or
received from. There are totally 9 PIN regions in India. PIN helps to sort the
letters fast as every city in India is assigned a unique Postal Index Number.
Also known as Pincode, it is
basically a code used in the system of post office numbering by India Post
functioning under the aegis of the Indian Postal Administration. The PIN is a
six digits long code. PIN is an integral part of the Indian Postal System and
has been implemented for the purpose of easing the functioning of the Postal
system in the country. It has an interesting background and contemporary

History behind the introduction
of PIN
India is a heterogeneous country,
comprising myriad cultures, traditions, values, and of course, communities.
Thus, there are great numbers of places bearing similar names or used in
different languages. This was one big problem to Indian Postal system once. In
order to do away with the obstacles, Mr. Shriram B. Velanker introduced the PIN
system in the year 1972. It was introduced for the purpose of simplifying the
delivery system and manual sorting of addresses. It has, ever since its
introduction, played a key role in streamlining the whole framework of India
post.
Postal zones in India
Presently, there are nine postal
zones in the country, which include one functional zone (which is for the
Indian Army) and other eight regional zones. In a PIN code, the first digit is
indicative of the region to which it belongs; the second digit is indicative of
the sub-region; and the third digit indicates the assortment of the district
within the region. The last three digits refer to individual post offices.

Delivery System
The delivery system has been
placed in such a manner that every PIN code is mapped to one individual post
office, receiving all the posts to be delivered within its jurisdiction. The
delivery office can be a Head Office (abbreviated as HO), General Post Office
(Abbreviated as GPO), or Sub Office (Abbreviated as SO). SO are generally found
in urban areas. There are Branch Offices (abbreviated as BO) situated in rural
areas but they provide very limited postal services.
