SSLC Full Form is Secondary School Leaving Certificate. SSLC is a certificate acquired by a student who completes the secondary school level. This is obtained on completion of the 10th-grade public examination in India. The Indian school system basically comprises of 5 years of primary schooling and 5 years of secondary schooling.
Obtaining an SSLC certification declares a student to have completed the basic schooling. Further, the student decides on which subject or branch of studies he or she wishes to choose in higher secondary and degree courses. After obtaining Secondary School Leaving Certificate, a student can go for Higher Secondary School (or) take up Diploma courses. SSLC is formulated by regional board of education affiliated with the school. It is regarded as one of the most important steps of basic education.

These institutes provide training in skills required for the occupations that are technical in nature.
In certain Indian states, the SSLC has gained popularity as the common eligibility exam. For example, this scenario can be found in the states of Tamil Naidu, Karnataka, and Kerela. The boards that conduct the certification exams in these three states are later in the article.

Importance of SSLC Exam

The formulation of the exam conducted to obtain the SSLC is done by the school’s affiliated regional education board. The faculty members of the school have no part in it. The student’s performance in this exam is among the main factors in getting admission to the India’s pre-university courses. Due to this reason, the SSLC is referred to as the 1st essential exam that is undertaken by the student.
In India, there was a time when the birth registrations were not mandatory. The certificate of SSLC was utilized as a proof of the birth date during that time. Now too, in accordance with the website of MEA, this is valid for those who are born before the year 1989. This is applicable for the issuing of the civil documents, like passports.

Tenth Board Exam

The tenth board exam, used for obtaining the SSC and SSLC certification, is conducted by the State boards as well as the CBSE.  In the case of a state board, the exams are scheduled generally for the months of March or February. The results are declared in May or June. The application for the exam is usually submitted by the students in November, which consists of their personal details, the current status of education and subjects.
The admit cards for the exam is given twenty-five days prior it’s starting. There are numerous fields for which the exams are offered. These consist of the subjects like social studies, math, and science. The exams are also offered for the subjects like foreign or regional languages. The conduction of the exam is done in the format of pen and paper only.

Procedure of the SSLC exam

The exam for obtaining the SSLC is conducted simultaneously all over the nation in the case of CBSE. The distribution of question paper is done by the overseeing education board. The question paper’s contents are closely guarded. The exam can include numerous question paper sets.
For ensuring impartiality, the candidates take their tenth board exam in the exam centre different from their own school. The candidates are not allowed to identify themselves on the sheet being used for answering in the exam. They can do so with a number which masks their identity. The usage of calculators is not allowed. The logarithmic tables that are provided by the exam centres themselves can be used. The exam for every course lasts for about three hours.

TNBSE

In this state, the SSLC is being used as a proof of common eligibility. The department responsible for conducting the exam for SSLC is also known as the TNBSE. The formation of this board was done in 1911. The head office is present in Chennai, which itself is in Tamil Nadu. The board can extend its jurisdiction only to the schools present in Tamil Naidu only.
Instead of affiliating with the TNBSE, the schools can also affiliate themselves to either ICSE or the CBSE. These two boards have the proper authority to conduct the exams of classes tenth and twelfth. They also have the authorization to award the SSLC certificate to the candidates successful in the tenth board exam. The releasing of the results for the class tenth exam is done by the board in May.

SCERT

Another state where the SSLC is used as the eligibility proof is Kerela. The education department in this state responsible for conducting certification exam is referred to as the SCERT. Its main aim lies in providing assistance, support and guidance to the state department of education so that it can bring a quality improvement in the secondary as well as elementary education.

Additionally, it also helps in developing information systems, coordinating teacher’s education at every level and has a major hand in developing instruction manual and curricular policies.
