History of KFC:
The preliminary discussion on KFC must have certainly sparked off interest in the readers, as to how it all started. Although a brief mention has been made, it needs further elaborate discussion for better appreciation of the story behind the foundation of a famous international fast food brand. SO, let us begin with historical facts.
Harland Sanders was born in the year 1890. He lost his father when he a five, which compelled his mother to work at a canning plant. Because of that, Sanders, who was also the eldest of his siblings, was tasked with the duty of taking care of his siblings. Due to increase in his responsibilities, his mother taught me to cook when he seven years old. Sanders attempted many career options but did not receive stable success.
In the year 1930, he took control over a Shell filing station situated on US Route 25, just outside the small town of North Corbin, Kentucky. From here, he began his journey that eventually established what now is known as KFC. He was honored with the title of Kentucky Colonel by the then Governor Ruby Laffoon because of his major achievements in his enterprise. Sanders expanded the business by including 142 seats and a motel, which he named Sanders Court & Café.
He was attracted to the idea of opening up restaurant franchising concept and opened up the first franchise “Kentucky Fried Chicken” in Utah in the year 1952. The restaurant was a big success, leading to the expansion of the franchise to different outlets. It successfully managed to challenge the dominance of hamburgers in the market. This huge success, however, overwhelmed the Colonel Sanders (the name Harland Sanders used to brand himself) and in the year 1964, he eventually sold the company to a group of investors led by Jack C. Massey and John Y. Brown, Jr. Even though Colonel Sanders sold his company to them, his image is still used in advertisements of KFC.
As it was becoming increasingly popular as a fast food restaurant chain, it started opening food outlets in nearby countries like Canada, Mexico, and Jamaica in the 1960s period. The company underwent several changes and fluctuating market presence due to several changes in corporate structure. In the period 1970s, the company KFC was sold to the distributor of spirits Heublein, which eventually sold the chain to PepsiCo.
The chain continued to expand in the nearby markets, however, in the year 1987, the company opened its first western restaurant chain in China, after which the chain witnessed a boom in the Chinese fast food market. Presently, China is the largest market of KFC. Later, PepsiCo did a major overhauling and spun off its restaurant division, then known as Tricon Global Restaurants, which later renamed as Yum! Brands.
As of the records in the year 2015, the company is reportedly in losses because of the new entrants in the market. Chick-fil-A has become a leading chicken food retailer since last three years, which has seriously affected the market of KFC. In order to deal with it, KFC has introduced a slew of measures like revamped packaging, expansion of menu, new décor and uniforms for staff members, etc. New advertisements have been released, which feature Darrell Hammond as Colonel Sanders for quite some time.
Operations of KFC worldwide:
All the main operations of the company are conducted from its main headquarters situated in 1441 Gardiner Lane, Louisville, Kentucky. The main headquarter building is known as the “White House” because of its three storey colonial architecture that gives it a resemblance to the White House, the home of the United States’ President. Despite incurring losses worldwide due to new entrants in the market, KFC still maintains a strong operational picture. KFC has recorded $23 billion sales in the year 2013.
It has opened maximum outlets in China, which, as mentioned before, is the largest market of KFC.Followed by China, the United States secures the second position. The outlets are either owned by the company itself or run by the franchise holder. Stats show that only about 11 percent outlets are owned by the company itself otherwise, the remaining are operated by the franchise holder.
Generally, all the KFC outlets would have the picture of Harland Sanders. Many KFC outlets have started offering the drive-through option, apart from takeout and dine-in options. KFC outlets are yet to offer full-fledged delivery services. Many outlets function as kiosks in places where a full-fledged outlet is not a possibility like a theme park, malls, colleges, stores, etc. The CEO and Chairman of Yum! Is David C. Novak, who is the central authority overseen KFC operations. The china market is overseen by Sam Su. The CEO of KFC is Muktesh Pant.
India as a KFC market:
The initial years of KFC were not very pleasant, as it dealt with a series of protests from anti-globalization, anti-western forces when it opened its first outlet on the famous Brigade Road in Bangalore in the year 1995. It is said that the decision to open its outlet in Bangalore was poorly thought because Bangalore was the headquarters of the anti-foreign farmers association, Karnataka Rajya Sangha, which is also a very influential group in the country.
In the month of August, the KFC outlet was ransacked by the protesters. The outlet was closed for a brief period when allegations of an excess of Monosodium Glutamate (abbreviated as MSG) were made. The KFC started expanding beyond Bangalore in the year 2004. The menu offered in Indian market is an unusually extensive meat-free menu, unlike its other international chains.
Controversy and criticisms faced by KFC:
KFC, like any other fast food restaurant chain, is open to controversies and criticism that have become a regular affair. Due to the rise in awareness regarding ill effects of fast food on health on consumption of fast food and an increase in obesity, particularly in the United States, KFC has come under fire. Ever since the year 2003, the international animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (abbreviated as PETA) have been protesting against the choices of poultry distributors of KFC. The only exception to this issue is KFC Canada, which has entered into a contract promising to only engage with animal friendly distributors and suppliers.
In the year 2010, an advertisement of KFC was broadcasted in which white cricket fans would throw friend chicken to pacify the supporters of West Indies cricket team. The advertisement was challenged to be insensitivity to blacks. KFC suffered a major setback in the year 2012 in its largest market China when it was found that the KFC suppliers were using growth hormones and antibiotics on poultry choices that were in clear violation of the Chinese law. The controversy caused a major decline in the sales. However, the outlets witnessed a considerable rise in the year 2013.
